Despite her young age, she is, at times, referred to as "mother" by younger slaves. She does not mind to domestic house work, since she has been trained for it. Unfortunately, she suffers from low self esteem and, as an owned slave, her jealousy can be both frightening and life threatening. She will do just about anything to become the master's "favorite" and she isn't below sabotaging and whining when she is neglected. She is sold for a high price because of her skills, but slave owners beware, she has a mean jealous streak. She was actually the daughter of a wealthy businessman, and her mother had died in childbirth. Her father married a young, pretty lady who had a daughter of her own, and Somalia constantly competed with the other daughter for the affections of her father. Of course, the new wife wasn't very fond of Somalia and constantly put her down, and, after much debate, the father sent Somalia away to the slave house, where Somalia's ill-feelings about being second festered.
